How Power Windows Work

Power window systems use a combination of both mechanical and electrical components to allow your vehicle’s windows to move up and down with ease.

The window switch sends power to the vehicle’s power window motor, which in turn powers the assembly’s window regulator. The power window regulator converts the rotary motion of the window regulator motor into up and down motion for the window.

Power windows come in two different styles. As the window regulator motor spins, it turns a set of crank gears, which causes the window regulator to move in a scissor-like motion. This creates an upward thrust.

More recently, many vehicles have adopted cable-operated window regulator systems. This system involves winding a cable through a set of pulleys that are acted upon by the system’s window lift motor.

In operation, this cable is pulled back and forth to raise and lower the window it’s attached to. How to Open a Power Window Manually
Mechanical problems always occur at the most inopportune moment. Problems with the power window system are no exception. If you are in the middle of a drive and are unable to close the window again, use these steps to resolve the situation:

1. Remove the door panel: First, remove the interior door panel of your vehicle.
2. Disable the window motor: Turn off the power to the window motor and store the corresponding connector safely out of the way.
3. Remove the window regulator from the window. Now loosen all fasteners between the window and the window regulator.
4. Lift the window with your hands: Place your palms on either side of the window and carefully lift the window to an upright position.
5. Block the window in place: Place one or two wooden blocks on the inside door compartment to block the window in place.
6. Reinstall the door panel: Finally, reinstall the door panel on your vehicle, making sure all fasteners are tight.
