Symptoms of Coolant Temperature Sensor Failure
The CTS uses a resistor to measure the temperature, which is then used as a thermostat. As the temperature increases, the sensor resistance changes in proportion to the temperature, and the current increases.
The ECU sends electrical signals through the CTS, measuring voltage drops and converting current information into temperature readings.
The ECU uses this information to control fuel injection, ignition timing, and the electric radiator fan to maintain optimal temperatures. As the engine cools, the ECU supplies an air/fuel mixture, or a higher proportion of fuel compared to the amount of air entering the engine. If the engine starts to overheat, the ECU activates the radiator fan. For example, this is a common behavior when standing at a traffic light for a long time on a hot day.
