Autocross Tips for Beginners

1) Just have fun on the first day

No one starts fast on the first day of an autocross, even if they have experience on a race track. Autocross requires unique skills to make the car dance, but the fastest way to go around the track is not always the standard racing line.

2) Find a beginner group

Many clubs offer beginner classes or make special exceptions for beginners. For example, if it’s your first time driving, you might be able to race other drivers instead of editing the track. This is also a great way to make new friends.

3) Get technical before you ruin yourself

Most autocross clubs will conduct what’s called a “tech” inspection of your vehicle. During tech inspection, employees check each vehicle for obvious mechanical problems.

Tech inspection is a quick process where an inspector inspects your tires, but be sure to inspect your vehicle yourself before leaving home on race day.

This is your opportunity to check tire pressure, add fluids, and look for sloppy steering, spongy brakes, coolant leaks, and loose lug nuts/bolts.

4) Check the Weather

You’ll be spending a lot of your day outdoors, so be sure to check the weather and dress appropriately for the conditions. Autocrosses are held in all weather conditions. Bring sunscreen, a raincoat, or whatever Mother Nature provides.

5) Bring a lunch

Most events don’t provide food, so be sure to pack plenty of water and a few snacks before the event. Driving when hungry or dehydrated is no fun. It’s a good idea to bring a chair to sit on between running groups.
