How to Dispose of Old Gas (The Safe and Legal Way)
Having spare gas bottles on hand can be handy for car emergencies or gas-powered garden tools, but it can certainly be a hassle if you forget about it and leave it out for long periods of time. Old gasoline doesn’t burn well.
Gasoline is made up of several compounds, some of which are considered carcinogens and are highly toxic to animals, people and the environment. It is explosive and highly flammable in both liquid and gaseous form. It is therefore not surprising that disposal of gasoline is carefully regulated and controlled.
The best course of action is prevention. It is best to use stored gasoline regularly to prevent deterioration. If your power tools are also in hibernation during this time of year, do not store them for the winter.

Storing gasoline safely

Check the floor for debris and water. Fresh gasoline should have little to no sediment.
Take a quick smell. Used gasoline will have a strange odor, no odor at all, or a very strong odor like paint. To achieve the highest purity, filter it through a color filter first.

Will AutoZone (or any other store) accept used gasoline? Most major auto parts stores won’t accept used gasoline, but they might accept used oil.
Can I just let the old gasoline evaporate? In the past, some people would dispose of used gasoline by pouring it into a shallow dish and leaving it outside to evaporate. Doing this will leave behind an oily residue, which is still dangerous.
Letting gasoline evaporate is still not a good idea, as it releases harmful fumes into the environment. Check your state’s laws to see if this is legal in your area.
